Final Rugby at Newlands for the year
Posted by Pieter in Videos
What can one say? The Bulls, loaded with Springbok stars, came to a hopeful and packed Cape Town... and thanks to two gents in particular, managed to down a courageous WP side in the best game of the season.
I was lucky to host a few backpackers and visitors, as well as have some good friends including Graham Ferreira, my long lost it's a small world guy (I did randomly bump into him in London, Spain and Israel during my travels).
It was a beautiful sunny day, with Groote Schuur packed and an early hopeful result as the Cheetahs downed the Sharks to give us a whiff at a home final.
It was not to be, however. Province shook off their awe of their much revered opponents to claw back into the game, and when Gio Aplon scored a spectacular try, it was anyone's ball game. Joe Pietersen had another excellent game, and didn't miss with the boot... but then, with two minutes to go and leading by one point, there was an aimless kick... and then the guy we love to hate, Sireli Nicalakannierugbyspeellie caused a penalty with a high tackle.
Morne Steyn stepped up... and there went our dreams of a first Currie Cup in ten years.
But it was an awesome game, which I got to share with Dianna (she's been here three weeks and has been to three rugby games- that's my girl) and no regrets.
Bring on next year!
